D2C vs DTC: Is There Any Difference?

D2C and DTC both mean direct-to-consumer. Here is why two spellings exist, which regions use which, and what the model actually involves for a brand.

Short answer: There is no difference. D2C and DTC are two abbreviations of the same phrase, direct-to-consumer. DTC is more common in the United States, D2C in India and much of Asia. Both describe brands that sell straight to customers rather than through retailers or marketplaces.

Why two spellings exist

Both come from “direct-to-consumer”. DTC takes the first letter of each word; D2C replaces “to” with “2”, the same shorthand used in B2B and B2C. American publications and agencies lean towards DTC. Indian media, investors and founders generally write D2C. Neither is more correct.

What the model actually means

A direct-to-consumer brand owns the whole chain to the customer: product, storefront, marketing, data and the relationship after purchase. There is no retailer taking margin and no marketplace owning the customer.

D2C / DTC Retail or marketplace
Margin You keep it, but pay to acquire customers Shared with retailer or platform
Customer data Yours Mostly theirs
Brand control Complete Limited
Demand You create it Partly provided by footfall or platform traffic
Repeat purchase You can drive it directly Harder without contact details

What this means in practice

Because you pay for every customer, two numbers decide whether a D2C brand works: CAC, the cost to acquire a customer, and LTV, what that customer is worth over time. Everything else, from creative to checkout to email flows, exists to improve one of those. Our CAC and LTV calculator works out both from your figures.

Does the spelling matter for marketing?

Only for search. People looking for help type both, so brands and agencies serving a global audience should use each naturally rather than pick one. For everything else, use whichever your customers and market use.

Frequently asked questions

What does DTC stand for?

Direct-to-consumer: selling straight to the end customer without a retailer or wholesaler in between.

Is D2C the same as eCommerce?

Not quite. eCommerce is selling online, which includes marketplaces and resellers. D2C specifically means the brand sells its own products directly, usually through its own store.

Can a brand be both D2C and sell on marketplaces?

Yes, and many do. The distinction is about the channel, not the company, and most brands run a mix.

Which spelling should Indian brands use?

D2C is the common convention in India. If you sell to US or UK customers, use DTC in that market’s content.
