To optimize product images for SEO, you need to do two things at once: help search engines understand what the image shows, and keep the file light enough that your pages stay fast. Most stores we review do neither well. The pictures themselves look great, but they are named something like IMG_4821.jpg, have no alt text, and weigh several megabytes.
That matters more than it sounds. Images are usually the heaviest part of a product page, and they are also a source of traffic, since shoppers find products through Google Images and visual search. This guide shows how to fix both sides.
Why product image SEO matters
- Speed: Large images slow pages down, which hurts rankings and conversions, especially on mobile.
- Visibility: Descriptive file names and alt text help your images appear in image search.
- Accessibility: Alt text lets people using screen readers know what is shown. This is the primary purpose of alt text, and good SEO follows from doing it well.
- Conversion: Clear, well-shot images that load quickly sell products.
1. Name the file before you upload it
Search engines read the file name as a clue. Rename files on your computer first, because changing it after upload is awkward.
- Use lowercase words separated by hyphens.
- Describe the product, and add color or angle where helpful.
- Keep it short and readable.
| Poor | Better |
|---|---|
| IMG_4821.jpg | white-linen-shirt-front.jpg |
| DSC00234-final2.png | tan-leather-tote-bag-side.jpg |
Avoid keyword stuffing, such as long names that repeat the same phrase.
2. Write useful alt text
Alt text describes the image for people who cannot see it and for search engines. Good alt text is specific and honest.
- Describe what is actually shown.
- Include the product name and a key detail such as color, material or angle.
- Keep it concise, roughly one short sentence.
- Do not start with image of or picture of. Screen readers already announce it as an image.
- Do not stuff keywords.
| Image | Weak alt text | Better alt text |
|---|---|---|
| Front view of a shirt | shirt | White linen shirt, front view, relaxed fit |
| Detail shot of stitching | linen shirt men buy linen shirt cheap | Close-up of the collar stitching on a white linen shirt |
In Shopify, you can edit alt text from the product page by opening the image and choosing Add alt text. For decorative images that add no information, it is acceptable to leave alt text empty so screen readers skip them.
3. Choose the right size and dimensions
Uploading a huge original is the most common mistake.
- A longest side of around 2000 pixels is plenty for most product images, including zoom.
- Keep aspect ratios consistent across a collection so the grid looks tidy and does not jump while loading.
- Do not upload a camera original straight from a phone or DSLR.
4. Compress before you upload
Compression reduces file size, often a lot, with little or no visible loss.
- Use a compression tool or an image app to shrink files before upload.
- Use JPEG for photographs and PNG only where you need transparency or sharp graphics.
- Aim to keep typical product images well under a few hundred kilobytes where quality allows.
Shopify delivers images through its CDN and can serve modern formats such as WebP to browsers that support them, which helps. It still cannot make an oversized source file small, so compress first.
5. Use responsive images and lazy loading correctly
A good theme serves smaller image files to smaller screens. Check that yours does, and test on a phone.
Lazy loading, which delays loading until an image is about to be seen, is good for images below the fold. But there is an important exception:
- Do not lazy-load the main image at the top of the page. It is usually your Largest Contentful Paint element, and delaying it makes the page feel slower.
Our guide to improving Shopify store speed explains why this matters for Core Web Vitals.
6. Set width and height to avoid layout shift
When the browser does not know an image’s dimensions, the page can jump as images load, which hurts Cumulative Layout Shift. Make sure your theme sets width and height or an aspect ratio for product and collection images.
7. Show products from multiple angles, with context
Search engines and shoppers both respond to quality.
- Include front, back, side and detail shots.
- Add a lifestyle image showing the product in use or being worn.
- Show scale where size is a question.
- Use clean, well-lit photos on a consistent background for the main image.
- Avoid putting important text inside the image. Search engines cannot reliably read it, and it is hard to read on small screens.
8. Make sure images are discoverable
- Shopify’s automatically generated sitemap includes product images, which helps Google find them.
- Keep images in the page’s main content, and not only as CSS backgrounds, so they can be indexed.
- Check that structured data for the product includes the image, which many themes do by default. Test a page in Google’s Rich Results Test.
9. Do it in bulk without losing quality
For a large catalog, fixing every image by hand is slow.
- Start with your best sellers and top collections.
- Use a bulk compression workflow or an image app. Our guide to the best Shopify SEO apps covers options and what to check before installing.
- If you use automatic alt text, review it for your most important products and correct anything vague or inaccurate.

Does alt text help SEO?
Yes. It helps search engines understand an image and supports image search. Its first job is accessibility, and writing it well for people is also the best SEO approach.
What is the best image format for Shopify?
JPEG works well for most product photographs, and PNG suits graphics that need transparency. Shopify can serve WebP to supported browsers automatically, so you do not have to convert files yourself.
How big should Shopify product images be?
Around 2000 pixels on the longest side is a good target for most stores, compressed before upload.
Can product images bring traffic from Google?
Yes, through image search and visual search, especially when images are clear, well named and described, and sit on pages that are themselves well optimized. See our guide on how to optimize Shopify product pages for Google.
