If you want to optimize Shopify product pages for Google, the good news is that a handful of changes do most of the work. In the stores we review, the product pages are usually fine to look at but are missing the basics that help them show up: original descriptions, clear titles, properly named images and valid structured data.
A product page has two jobs. It has to be found, and it has to convince someone to buy. Good product page SEO supports both, so we treat them together. This guide covers the on-page steps in the order we would do them.
1. Choose one primary keyword for each product
Start with how a real shopper would search for this item. Most product searches include a product type plus a modifier such as material, use, size or color.
- Use Search Console to see queries the page already gets.
- Check Google autocomplete for the product type.
- Pick one primary keyword and a few related phrases.
Do not target the same keyword on a product page and its collection page. Let the collection page go after the broader term, and let the product page go after the specific one.
2. Write a clear SEO title
The title tag is one of the strongest on-page signals and the first thing a searcher reads.
A simple formula that works for most products:
Product name + key attribute + brand
Example (illustrative): Relaxed Fit Linen Shirt for Men, White | Brand Name
Keep it to roughly 50 to 60 characters so it is not cut off, and avoid stuffing it with keywords. In Shopify, edit it under Search engine listing at the bottom of the product page.
3. Write a meta description that earns the click
A meta description is not a ranking factor in itself, but it affects click-through rate. Mention the main benefit, one differentiator, and a reason to act, such as free returns or fast delivery if those are true for your store. For a full walkthrough, see how to write Shopify meta descriptions.
4. Clean up the URL handle
Shopify product URLs follow the pattern /products/your-handle. Keep the handle short, readable and keyword-relevant, for example relaxed-linen-shirt-white.
If a product is already live and ranking, think twice before changing the handle. If you do, Shopify can create a redirect for you, but check that it was added under URL Redirects.
5. Use a single, descriptive H1
Your product title is normally the H1. Make sure it describes the product clearly, and that your theme is not adding a second H1 elsewhere on the page.
6. Write original, useful product descriptions
This is the change we see make the biggest difference to how complete a page feels. Supplier descriptions are shared across every store that sells the product.
A good description covers:
- Who it is for and the problem it solves
- Key features written as benefits, not just a list of specs
- Materials, dimensions, compatibility or ingredients
- Sizing and fit guidance where relevant
- Care or usage instructions
- Shipping and returns information, or a link to it
Break the text up with short paragraphs, bullet points and subheadings so it is easy to scan on a phone. Work the main keyword in naturally once or twice. If you have to force it, leave it out.
7. Optimize the images
Images sell the product and can also bring traffic from Google Images and visual search.
- Give files descriptive names before uploading.
- Add alt text that describes what is shown, including color or angle where useful.
- Compress files and use sensible dimensions so pages load quickly.
- Include several angles and a lifestyle shot where possible.
Our separate guide on optimizing product images for SEO goes deeper.
8. Add reviews and customer questions
Reviews add fresh, unique content, build trust and often enable star ratings in search results when the markup is valid. A short FAQ section that answers common pre-purchase questions (sizing, delivery times, compatibility) also helps shoppers decide and gives search engines more context.
Only show reviews that are real. Fake or incentivized-without-disclosure reviews can break platform rules and damage trust.
9. Check structured data
Product structured data tells search engines the price, availability, rating and more. Many Shopify themes include basic Product markup, but quality varies.
- Test a few product pages in Google’s Rich Results Test.
- Make sure price and availability match what is shown on the page.
- If a theme and an app both output schema, remove one source to avoid duplicates.
10. Handle variants sensibly
Colors and sizes are usually best kept as variants on one product page, not as separate products. That keeps ranking signals together and avoids near-duplicate pages. Create separate pages only when there is genuinely separate search demand and the products are different enough to deserve their own description.
11. Decide what to do with out-of-stock and discontinued products
- Temporarily out of stock: keep the page live, say clearly when it is expected back, and offer a notify-me option or related products.
- Gone for good: redirect to the closest relevant product or collection using URL Redirects. Do not send everything to the homepage.
12. Link the page into the rest of the store
Every product should be reachable from a relevant collection and link to related products. Add links from helpful blog posts to the products they discuss. Internal links tell Google which pages matter and help shoppers keep browsing.
13. Keep the page fast
Heavy images, sliders and many apps can slow a product page down, which hurts both rankings and conversions. See how to improve Shopify store speed.
14. Remember conversion, not just ranking
Traffic only matters if it buys. Clear pricing, delivery information, trust signals, an easy add-to-cart and a mobile-friendly layout all affect results. We cover this side in our work on product page optimization and Shopify conversion rate optimization.

Frequently asked questions
How long should a Shopify product description be?
As long as it needs to be to answer a buyer’s questions. For simple products that may be a few short paragraphs. For complex ones, more. Quality and usefulness matter more than word count.
Should I use the same description for similar products?
Avoid it. Near-identical descriptions across several pages make them harder to tell apart. Write distinct text, or combine them into one page with variants.
Do product reviews help SEO?
They add fresh content, build trust and can support star ratings in results when marked up correctly. They are also strong for conversion.
Should I change URLs of existing products?
Only if there is a clear reason. If you do, make sure a redirect from the old URL is in place.
